Department Of Shalakya Tantra

The department of Shalakyatantra deals with understanding the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of diseases occurring above the clavicle. Viz. Diseases of eyes, ears, nose, throat, head and neck. Since this branch of ayurveda deals with the most vulnerable and minute parts various specialized instruments and techniques are used for diagnosis and treatment

Shalakyatantra in ayurved refers to that branch of ayurvedic medicine that treats the diseases above the neck and shoulder. It derives its nomenclature from the Sanskirt word Shalaka that means rod or probe. In the southern part of India Shalakyatantra is referred as Urdhwang Chikitsa. Urdhwang Chikitsa derives its nomenclature from the two words Urdhwang meaning: the body parts above the shoulder and Chikitsa meaning: treatment.

Shalakyatantra offered at the OPD of Ishan Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital is premised on the paradigm of Asthanga Ayurveda principles.
